I was never a big reader of Fables, loved the concept, but never got into it. So this week, when I saw the start of a new arc, I decided to jump in. The arc will span over the series 2 books, Fables and Jack of Fables, while introducing a new title, The Literals. Vertigo was quick to add some sidenotes at the end to comfort any worried readers who think ‘Crossover?! What is Vertigo DOING?!”. They are promising one simple, coherent story line, which will close up a ton of loose ends in the long run.
So, as a Fables virgin more or less, I knew I was going to have to fight to keep up with the story. Luckily, the chore wasn’t as rough as I had anticipated. Actually, I was able to figure out who the characters were (thanks to the childhood fairy tales.) and what the plot (at this point) exactly is. And I love it. The characters are automatically loveable due to their nostalgic touch, and their rather clever dialoge.
And, as all good arcs begin, we soon learn that all of exsistance may just be whiped out if our valiant heros pervail. The details of the appocolyptic scenario are ofcourse kept rather vague, but it looks like it will result in a clash of both the cast of Fables and Jack of Fables, with a newly introduced villian: The Literals.
So, needless to say, I’m really excited for this arc. A story I never read before, and even with 84 issues of back story I missed, I’m excited.
If you wanted to get into fables, this is the chance to do it!
